Oceanic Goddess inspirations

I'm back....not that I went anywhere... I've just been extra busy creating, as you all know I love to do. I've been making heaps since my last post and I'm sure I'll forget to share something so I'll show you all what I've been doing recently instead of trying to remember everything that I haven't shown.

I have been wanting to make a Goddess inspired doll for months and finally all the pieces came together and I created Oshun.

Oshun is the Brazilian Macumba Goddess of the waters...streams, brooks, rivers, waterfalls...and is known for her love of beautiful things. She is most of often depicted in yellow and golds...her favourite colours...and loves to adorn herself with beautiful treasures.

I did some google searching of Brazilian, Cuban, African models as not one of my doll books or patterns shows how to create faces from different countries or cultures. It has really inspired me to think outside the box too..there aren't enough dolls of different nationalities out there so I'm trying my hand at making more Goddess inspired dolls from all sorts of cultures. I'm pleased with how my Oshun turned out. So much so that I'm keeping her :)

Another reason I'm keeping her is this awesome mesh that I can't get any more of....

The AMAZINGLY talented Cheryl Dolby sent this to me wrapped around the spell box I purchased from her last year. She has the most gorgeous goddess inspired art and sculptures. She also sent me a couple of cards with her paintings printed on them and I used one to alter the cover of a journal for a journal writing workshop I have been (slack at)doing since the start of the year hosted by Dawn at Life Lines Journaling

I'm working on finding/seeing/recognising and realising my inner Goddess this year and this image of Cheryl's was perfect for the cover.

Another piece of the mesh was used in the hair of this mermaid...my very first mermaid doll.. who is swimming her way overseas as we speak to a lovely lady I friended on facebook. Jennifer Busby Matas of FaerySpell Creations makes beautiful faeries and costumes and we decided to have a swap. She has just started mermaid parties and asked if I could make her a mermaid she could take along with her to the parties. This mermaid is headed to her and I have a Spring faery she made on her way to me. Can't wait to meet her!

and from my first mermaid doll came several more........

This is Coral.....

real sea shells adorn her hair and sea urchin spikes highlight her eyes.

The shells were sent to me by another gorgeous lady I friended on facebook who makes stunning crystal and shell jewellery. Check out her creations at Cryshell Magic.

She posted pics of my mermaid on her page and also suggested that I should make my own facebook page to sell my creations. A lot of her fans agreed so I did ;) Wickedly Divine Creations is now on facebook and I have several dolls listed for sale on there if anyone is interested.

Yemaya is another Goddess inspired doll and as she is most often depicted as a mermaid I couldn't resist making a doll to represent her either....

Yemaya is the African-Caribbean Goddess of the sea, who gave birth to 14 orishas, or spirits. During Summer Solstice worshippers come to her shorelines wearing white and launch small boats filled with flowers and candles and gifts to her.

It is said that those who come to Yemaya and surrender to her find that their troubles are dissolved in the waters of her embrace.

And this lovely lady was created for Gemma from Cryshell as a thank you gift for keeping me supplied with shells. I have never found a great variety of different shells where we go to the beach so Gem offered to send me some whenever I need them.

I'm tempted to put a spear in her hand....she came out looking very Amazon warrior like. I was a bit iffy until I got her all finished and I'm kinda liking her myself now. Just hope Gemma does too.

I have several more mermaid bodies sewn up and have ideas for some witches to add for sale as well as my faeries as always.
I was asked the other day as I posted the mermaid overseas to make a couple to put in the post office shop as the manager of the office Helen adores them all and oohs and ahhs over everything I post. I have to show her before first before anything is boxed up and shipped away hehe

My Lynda Ladybird has been sent and received by Catherine at Homespun along with instructions and pattern so keep an eye out for her in August's issue of Homespun magazine and you can make you very own. I can't wait to see her in print and see other people creations of her. As I was writing up the instruction I found it easier to make one as I wrote so that I didn't miss anything (I sure hope I haven't missed anything!!) and I made this one up as a prop.

I used scrap fabrics for her skirt/tutu instead of the netting and purple just to see what it looked like. She doesn't look too bad I think.

I have lots more on the go so better get back to it all. I've been asked to have a stall for the Cape Clear land yacht race next month so I need to get a bit of a stash up to offer for sale. No rest for the Wicked(ly Divine).

OH....an added P.S. I almost forgot...my lovely talented Scottish friend Rhianon has started her own blog. Check out her beautiful quilts here at The Nifty Stitcher
